Past, Present and Future
Large, luminous and lascivious too
Mystical, mesmerising and marauding
All the ones living and the non-living that you woo -
Your partners, plunderers and philosophers
Sequestered, seared or augmented
In life, yours is the sole diktat that prevails.
The rejuvenating, ravaging memories
Keeps company with a conflicted, calm solitude
A benign, benevolent present that you have bestowed in the present
Strikes a sharp glimmer of spark, kindling smiles and unfurling sails of hope
In that most sought after fickle future.
Are these compartments of a mind -
Past, Present and Future?
Delusions of an aching soul -
Reliving merry memories of mangoes and moons
Rejecting a solitary present burgeoning with silence
Awaiting an untrammeled, uncharted future
That, in a trice, would dissolve into another past?
Love, loss and longing
Clasping hands of my mom, tugging at the sleeves of my dad, caressing your soft lips with mine
Traversing a journey from uniforms, jeans to formals
From prattles to poignancy
Soulful sleeps to death, desolation and deceit.
Trysts with you, Time, have always been
Tortuous, torrid and teasing
In the Past, Present and in a perhaps Future too.

From Moods, Moorings and Memories, collection of poems.
Lovely alliteration and some stunning lines on mangoes and moons etc. A thoughtful meditation on past, present and future, love it!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Dr. Koshy :)
DeleteComing from you, it is truly an honour.
Beautiful poem !.Stunning , poignant imagery ❤️ Loved the alliteration.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Dr.Santosh :)
DeleteSo happy to read this
Though the verse reveals a certain skill in alliteration, and word play, it has image that can make me sit up and say “aha!”. Though it was a pleasant read, the experience did not lead me personally to a contemplative moment. I look for unusual metaphors and striking images in a poem. A poem should be like a sunset: brilliant, mellow, a complete experience, lingering long into the night.
ReplyDeleteThank you for a candid evaluation Sir.
DeleteSo full of 'love, loss and longing', to quote the author herself...
ReplyDelete'Awaiting an... future, that, in a trice, would...etc'
Then,'tugging at the sleeves of my dad'
These lines painfully squeeze the heart...
That is so kind of you Dr.Lata. Thanks so much for your warm words.
